Discover Our Roots
Welcome to Naldehra
Perched above Jubar Village and its terraced fields, Naldehra House sits just a kilometre from Naldehra Golf Course and forty scenic minutes from Shimla — a contemporary retreat built in tribute to Himachal’s architectural heritage.
The building’s arched windows, many carved from single solid wood logs, echo a craftsmanship rarely practised today, drawn directly from the traditional forms of old Himalayan mountain settlements.
The design is also a quiet tribute to a fort that once stood above Jubar village, lost to fire in the late 1880s and remembered only in local stories. Built almost on its old footprint, Naldehra House now rises as a six-storey tower purpose-built to frame uninterrupted views of the snow-capped Himalayas — the Hilltop View Point.
Naldehra House is the creation of Puran Bhardwaj, an experienced expedition leader and author of The Himalayan Bond: Between Man and the Environment. Raised in the farming village of Thali, near Suni in the Sutlej valley, Puran grew up among terraced rice fields, mud homes, slate roofs and hand-carved wooden balconies — an upbringing that shaped a lifelong respect for Himachal’s disappearing architectural heritage.
That respect first took shape when he restored his grandfather’s mud house in Thali, the Shimla Farmhouse (worth a visit if you’re travelling to the hot springs at Tattapani), reviving its slate roof and traditional woodwork. The project became the seed of a bigger idea — that traditional Himalayan design could still inspire something new.
When a local Shimla architect visited during construction, he was struck by the depth of thought behind the build and encouraged the team to follow Puran’s vision fully. Walls, windows and structural details were reworked until the building matched that original idea.
Step through the entrance and you’re met by stone walls nearly two feet thick — solid, fort-like, and timeless. Set into them are softly lit alcoves, just as in traditional Himalayan homes, once used to hold lamps, sacred objects and treasured books.
Arrive the memorable way — on horseback or on foot, along the short scenic route up from Naldehra Golf Course, just a kilometre below. The gentle climb through terraced fields and pine forest builds anticipation for what’s waiting at the top: a quiet, private perch above the valley, made for couples looking to get away from it all.
Just forty minutes from Shimla town, Hilltop View Point makes for an easy escape any time of day. Come up for afternoon tea with the mountains in view, linger into evening for sunset drinks as the light turns gold across the valley, or time a visit for a clear morning to watch the snow-capped Himalayas rise on the horizon.
However you arrive, the view is the real destination. From the top of the six-storey tower, Hilltop View Point opens onto a rare, unbroken 360-degree panorama — Jubar Village and its terraced fields directly below, the Sutlej valley beyond, and the high Himalayan peaks capping the horizon in snow. Few spots in the region let you take in this much, in every direction, from one place.
