Discover Our Roots
Perched gracefully above forests and terraced fields near the renowned Naldehra Golf Course, and just a short scenic drive from the historic hill town of Shimla, Naldehra House stands as a rare, contemporary architectural creation that honours Himalayan heritage while offering a distinctive and inspiring retreat in the mountains.
At first sight, the building captivates visitors with its elegant curved arched windows, many carved from single solid wood logs—a craftsmanship rarely seen in modern construction today. These graceful arches and wooden frames are not merely decorative elements; they are deeply inspired by the traditional architectural forms once found in historic mountain settlements of Himachal.
The design is also a tribute to a historic fort above Jubar village, remembered in local stories but tragically destroyed by fire in the late 1880s. Through imagination, dedication, and respect for history, the spirit of that lost heritage has been reborn almost on the footprint of the old fort, now standing proudly in the form of Naldehra House.
Behind this vision is Puran Guide (The Author of the book “ The Himalayan Bond- Between man and the Environment), a young man who grew up in the rural farming village of Thali in the valley of the Sutlej River. Raised among terraced rice fields, traditional mud homes, slate roofs, and beautifully carved wooden balconies, he developed a deep appreciation for the architectural heritage of Himachal. As many old houses slowly disappeared over time, Puran believed they represented an irreplaceable cultural legacy that deserved preservation.
His passion began close to home. In Thali village he rescued and lovingly restored his grandfather’s traditional mud house, reviving its elegant slate roof and intricate Himachali wood carvings. This restoration became the foundation of a larger vision—to demonstrate that traditional Himalayan design could still inspire modern architecture.
When construction of Naldehra House began, experienced architect Mr Koundal from Shimla visited to inspect the work. After observing the passion and depth of thought behind the design, they encouraged the builders to embrace Puran’s vision fully, advising that his ideas should guide the architectural direction. As a result, many walls, windows, and structural elements were redesigned, rebuilt, and refined until the building truly reflected the original concept.
The result is a property rich in craftsmanship, character, and architectural personality.
Visitors arriving at the entrance are greeted by thick stone walls nearly two feet wide, creating an immediate sense of strength, warmth, and timelessness. Within these walls are beautifully illuminated alcoves, reminiscent of traditional Himalayan homes where niches were used to display lamps, sacred objects, and treasured books.
Another remarkable feature is the two-century-old carved wooden door known as the “Prachin Darwaja.” This historic doorway was rescued by Puran and carefully restored to its former glory. It now opens into a charming rear garden before guests ascend the staircase to explore the house.
A wooden staircase with hand-carved railings, crafted by skilled artisans from Sharanpur, guides visitors through the building. Elegant wooden balconies and large arched windows frame sweeping views of forests, open fields, and distant Himalayan ridges, creating a seamless connection between architecture and landscape.
Rising above the structure is a distinctive tower crowned with a pagoda-style rooftop, its graceful arched windows echoing the forms of historic hill architecture while adding a striking visual identity to the property.
Inside, the rooms are spacious, warm, and inviting, featuring alpine wooden flooring and classic Victorian-style wall panelling. The interiors combine Himalayan tradition with timeless elegance, creating an atmosphere of comfort, heritage, and quiet mountain luxury. Every corner of the house reflects thoughtful design and careful attention to detail, making Naldehra House far more than an ordinary hotel—it is truly “The Himalayan Hilltop Retreat.”
Architects, tourism professionals, and hospitality experts who visit often admire the vision behind this creation. In a time when many buildings in the Shimla hills are simple concrete structures, Naldehra House offers a refreshing architectural alternative—a place where design respects the natural environment, rural heritage, and mountain character.
Yet the experience extends far beyond the building itself.
The property is known as one of the most beautiful sunset viewpoints in the region, where guests gather for afternoon tea or an evening drink while watching golden light fade over the surrounding hills. For many travellers exploring the area around Naldehra Golf Course, a visit to Naldehra House becomes a highlight of their journey.
Guests can also enjoy horse riding through forest trails and meadows, explore nearby villages, or take a scenic drive down to the Sutlej Valley, where natural hot water springs bubble beside the riverbanks and opportunities for water and river activities await.
One of the most memorable experiences offered to guests is a forest picnic in the alpine woods. A gentle twenty-minute walk leads through quiet woodland paths to a hidden mountain stream, perfect for a refreshing paddle. Along the way, visitors pass a natural village well, still used by locals collecting fresh water—offering a glimpse into the authentic rhythm of rural Himalayan life. It is a perfect walk before breakfast or a peaceful afternoon escape for coffee or a picnic lunch.
In every sense, Naldehra House represents something truly special in the Shimla hills. It is a place where heritage architecture, natural beauty, and community pride come together. More than simply a place to stay, it is a reminder that thoughtful architecture can preserve cultural traditions while creating unforgettable travel experiences.
For travellers seeking something rare, authentic, and inspiring in the mountains, Naldehra House is the ultimate romantic destination not to be missed.
